Some clients really make you sit back and say, “Okay, this is why photos matter.”
Domonicka is one of those clients for me.
I met her back when we were at ECU, and she was one of my very first clients when I started my photography business. Now here we are, thirteen years later, and she is still trusting me to photograph her family. That is not something I take lightly at all.
And what I love about Domo is that she has always been intentional about photos. Her family does not wait until everything is perfect, matching, planned to death, and Pinterest-board approved before they decide something is worth documenting. They make the memory, they show up, and they let the photos hold the season.
That is the part that gets me.
Because the older I get, the more I realize that a lot of us do not have as many photos as we should. Not because life was not beautiful, but because nobody stopped long enough to document it. Working with Domo and her family over the years has honestly made me recognize that gap in my own family, and it is one of the reasons I believe so deeply in what I do.
Photos are not just for now. They are for later. They are for the kids when they grow up. They are for the family group chat. They are for the days when you want to remember what this season felt like.
For this session, Domo wanted to celebrate her birthday with Gabi, and the sweetest part is that they actually share the same birthday. So of course we had to make it fun. Not stiff. Not too serious. Not “everybody sit perfectly still and smile.” That was not the assignment.
Gabi has energy, okay? She is busy, expressive, curious, and full of personality, so I wanted the session to give her something to do. We built the shoot around paint, canvases, brushes, cake, and letting her be free.
And honestly? It was perfect because it was not trying to be perfect.
They painted canvases, painted each other, laughed, played, ate cake, and made the kind of colorful little mess that turns into a real memory. These Raleigh birthday photos feel special because they feel like them. Sweet, playful, a little chaotic, and full of love.
That is the whole point.
A birthday does not need a massive production to be worth documenting. Sometimes all you need is a little paint, a little cake, a child being fully herself, and a mom intentional enough to say, “We’re going to remember this.”
