One thing I’m going to do every single year is struggle with figuring out what to do for my birthday.
It’s like the clock strikes July and all of a sudden my family and friends are asking, “What do you want to do? What do you want this year?” And honestly… I never know.
Everything I wanted, I’d already bought myself over the past few months. I drove down to Atlanta to see Beyoncé not once but twice in the same week during the Cowboy Carter Tour (and let’s be real… what’s topping that?).
So I gave up. I told myself I’d keep it simple this year. No plans, no pressure. Just simple.

For weeks I went back and forth about doing a photoshoot. I’m a photographer… I literally live for capturing moments. It’s just when it comes to my own, I put it off. I didn’t feel like going all out this year, I wasn’t in the mood to plan anything elaborate. I just wanted peace.
But on the morning of my birthday, I woke up with nothing to do and got this quiet nudge:
“Do something for yourself.”
So I did.
I decided to lean into where I am in life right now. I’m resting, caring for myself, and learning how to pour into me the way I’ve poured into others.
A “Birthday in Bed” men’s lifestyle photoshoot theme.
I grabbed a few things from TJ Maxx and Michaels. I swung by the ABC store for a small bottle of D’USSÉ and I picked up a few cupcakes from Madam B’s Bakery here in Raleigh (highly recommend, by the way).
It ended up being the perfect birthday activity. Just a moment to celebrate myself. And honestly? I’m glad I did.
As someone who’s photographed dozens of birthdays this year, it was only right that I took the time to do the same for myself.
This shoot reminded me of something important:
Sometimes, it’s not about making a big production. Sometimes, it’s just about showing up for yourself.
Taking the time to mark the moment. Documenting where you are right now… even if it’s just in bed, surrounded by black balloons, cupcakes, and a bottle of cognac.
So if you’ve been on the fence about celebrating yourself or doing a shoot, let this by your reminder:
You’re worth documenting. And sometimes, the best memories are the ones you didn’t overthink.
Happy Birthday to me!
