There’s something different about photographing a couple who’s already lived a full love story together.
Lakisha and Shawn have been married for 20 years.
That’s twenty years of choosing each other through seasons, changes, growth, and real life. And instead of letting that milestone quietly pass by, they’re honoring it with a vow renewal that feels intentional and deeply meaningful.
As part of their collection, they included a complimentary engagement session, so we met at the NC Museum of Art in Raleigh to document this chapter before their vow renewal day. It was cold outside, the kind of cold that makes you move a little faster, but once we started shooting, none of that really mattered.
What stood out was the ease between them.
The way they laughed without forcing it.
The way they naturally leaned toward each other.
The way silence didn’t feel awkward, it felt comfortable.
I always give my couples a starting point when it comes to posing, but Lakisha and Shawn didn’t need much. They took what I gave them and made it their own, moving in ways that felt familiar, unguarded, and honest. Nothing felt performative. Nothing felt rushed. It felt like two people who know each other well and aren’t trying to prove anything.
You can see it in how they look at each other. There’s confidence there. Trust. A softness that only comes from time and shared history. Their love doesn’t feel loud, but it’s powerful. It shows up in small moments, in quiet gestures, in the way they’re fully present with one another.
Documenting their engagement photos felt less like directing and more like witnessing something sacred. These are the kinds of sessions that remind me why I love what I do. Not because everything is perfect, but because it’s real. Because it carries weight. Because it tells a story worth remembering.
If this session is any glimpse into what their vow renewal day will be like, I already know it’s going to be beautiful in the most meaningful way.
These Raleigh engagement photos are a celebration of love that has lasted, love that has grown, and love that continues to show up with intention. And being trusted to capture that is something I don’t take lightly.
