After over 12 years of photographing grads, UNC is hands down one of my favorite campuses. I always get so excited when I get an inquiry that comes in from a UNC grad! The campus is simply stunning. But last grad season one small hiccup prevented me from getting one of the most requested photos from UNC grads and I vowed to never let that happen again.
Let’s be real. If you’re taking your UNC Chapel Hill grad photos, the Old Well is non-negotiable. It’s like the Beyonce of photo spots on campus. But there’s the problem… even Beyonce comes with a line. And during grad season? That line can get extremely long and easily steal half of your shoot time!
I mean, I’ve literally seen people waiting 30 minutes, sometimes an hour, just to get a few shots at the Old Well. And if you’re only booked for an hour-long shoot? That’s your whole session gone. Nope… not on my watch.

The hack you didn’t know you needed
Here’s the move: bring someone with you (a friend, a sibling, a parent, or whoever) and let them hold your place in line at the Old Well while you and your photographer are across the street at a few other popular spots nearby. Have them text you when they get closer to the front of the line. By that time you’ve already shot half of your gallery.
Where to shoot while you wait
📍 The Stairs of the South Building — The first stop is right across the street from the Old Well at the South Building stairs. The wide steps and tall pillars give you a classic, powerful backdrop and it’s close enough that you won’t waste time walking.

📍 The UNC Seal — Next head straight to the UNC seal in front of South Building. It’s quick, simple, and one of those tradition shots every grad needs in their gallery.

📍 Polk Place — From there step back into Polk Place. With all the trees, greenery, and benches, it’s the perfect place for you to get a mix of walking shots, candids, and your cap toss.

📍 The Wilson Library Stairs — Finally keep walking through Polk Place until you reach Wilson Library. The huge stairs and dramatic columns give you that statement shot and it’s the perfect way to wrap up your photos before heading back to the Old Well.

Why this matters
At the end of the day, your UNC Chapel Hill grad photos should feel full, balanced, and stress-free. The Old Well is iconic, but it’s not the only shot that you should focus on. Using these nearby spots while someone holds your place in line gives you variety and saves you from wasting precious shoot time. Check out this UNC map to scout additional nearby locations for your shoot.
